Do not believe answer #1. It is factually incorrect. Architects rank among the lowest paid professionals. An attorney at the beginning of his/her career can be expected to earn approximately $46,000. A doctor, $131,000. An intern (i.e. unlicensed) architect would be lucky to make $30,000. And the picture gets worse with experience. Attorney and physician salaries rise much more quickly with experience than do architects' salaries. Of course, architects are rewarded for being creative, don't typically have to make life-or-death decisions, and are not universally despised. Also, being an architect is fun. An architect designs not only the exterior of a building, but figures out where it should be on the site (the land it is located on). He or she typically makes many decisions about how the interior of a building is going to look, choosing the style, material, and color of such items as flooring, wall surface, cabinets, baseboards, and so on.

Architects generally make about the same as a doctor or lawyer. That is a gross simplification but you get the picture.
Architect means 'designer'. Some design buildings, some boats, some landscapes etc.. There have been famous architects who wanted to have complete control of the whole design exercise: the building, the interior incl. paint schemes, the furnishings and the landscape around the building as well.
Normally an architect will accept any commission which is within their range of expertise if the fee is satisfactory.

Mainly they design space, inside or outside, buildings or bridges, gardens or parks you name it, if is designed and architect or engineer probably did it. They get paid a right good bunch, but of course their training is approaching six formal years and they have to be licensed to be independent.
