Here's how I got it.
First I noticed that there is no mode, but if there were a mode, it would be the same as one of the numbers already there.
So I averaged up the numbers already there (found the mean) and found it to be 7.
The sum of all the numbers is 35 and 35 divided by 5 (the number of elements you have) is 7.
If there were an additional 7 in there, the sum would be 42 and 42 divided by the new cardinal number (6) is also 7,
As a check, note the the current median of the set is 7, and if there were an adidtional 7 in there, the median would still be 7.
In fact you could have gotten it this way too, and then done the mean as a check. It's just taht I happened upon the mean first.

in order to keep the median a whole number the only number to pick is 7. Plus when you add it all up together plus the extra 7, divided by the number of numbers there are (6 numbers), you get a mean of 7, and if you have 2 sevens that is the mode, sense there are more 7's then any other number.
The answer is 7.

Well first look for possible medians....
put 8,5,9,6,7 in order:
5 6 7 8 9
Currently the current median is 7.
if you add another 7 the mode is 7 the median is 7 and the mean (average) is 7

put the #s in order first
5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Your choices are one of the numbers above (because of mode).
It's 7 because you need something in the middle. Right now 7 is in the middle. If you add either a 6 or an 8, the median would be 6.5 or 7.5 respectively. The only way everything is the same is if it is 7.
You don't even have to solve the problem in reality.

use guess and check (thats easiest for these problems). Ex. if you use 6, the median is 6.5, the mean is 51/6, the mode is 6. That doesn't work. with 7, tho, they are all 7. Another way to do it is, they are all consecutive, so you just find the middle one and use that and it will work.
