No, seriously .... the word "laptop" implies portability, which is what is was originally designed for.

ok, originally laptops where invented for people on the go mostly business man/woman. they would use them on their way to work or for business trips on the train, on the bus, on the airplane. Before people used to put these on their laps because there was no other place to put them as technology advanced and the popularity of laptops grew. businesses and transportation companies started to see they could profit from this new invention ( as they do with every other invention that becomes popular) and they started to acommodate their consumers with power supply connection to telephone connection to network connection get the picture. for example Starbucks and internet coffe shops. now business people take them to their offices and used them on their desk, nowadays we use them for everything from work to school to entertainment.

When you are on the move: train, plane, bus or car or you are not seated at your desk, then it becomes a laptop i.e. sits on your lap.

I don't know, but right now I am on my laptop and it is on my lap! I guess because it is a computer that you (key word) CAN put on your lap if you choose to.
