Magnesium has a valency of 2. How about nitride?

Mg3N2. These are the black flakes that you got when you burned magnesium ribbon in air. The Mg combined with N2 of the air also, the temperature was so hot. You decomposed the Mg3N2 to Mg(OH)2 afterwards by adding water

Mg3N2 + 6H2O ===> 3Mg(OH)2 + 2NH3

Then you calcined Mg(OH)2 to MgO +H2O by heating white hot.
