Is there a comparison?
It's like chalk and cheese.

If you have loads of time, space, money etc I'd defiantly go with the golden retriever but they are an ongoing pet that needs loads of exercise, attention and grooming.

If you can't offer these things it wouldn't be right to indulge in this kind of animal. HOWEVER a small hamster needs much less space, attention, grooming, food etc You need obviously to clean out there cage and give them food or water and handle it a lot if you want it to be tame but there not as needy as a dog.

The real answer lays with you. I hope you choose well.
A pet is definitely a long term investment and one to be chosen carefully.

That's too personal of a choice. A hamster is a short-term commitment. A golden retriever can be a 17 year commitment.

I would go with the golden retriever as they are more affectionate, but that's just personal choice.
