Well, he could be stressed, but it also could very well be that goldfish will, almost always, change colors over their lifetime. Goldfish's genes are being constantly mutated during the course of breeding and cross-breeding to come up with different shapes and colors of fish. So, these genes have not stabilized and very often the fish will start to revert back to the more stable genes in its pool. Especially if the color the fish is losing is black. That's always the first to go. Now, the stress. Just keep an eye on him. If your water temperature is correct, your water parameters are good and you have good filtration, then that's one thing you don't have to worry about. If his body looks healthy and he's eating, then that's also definitely good. If you see white spots or patches or red streaks, then you need to get him medicated. You may want to do a little "stress-relief" now by adding a little salt to the water. Not table salt. Use aquarium salt from the pet store. It's .3% solution, which translates to a scant 1 tsp per 1 gallon of water. Don't add other medications with salt though and don't overdo the salt as that can kill too. Good luck! Hope all goes well!

No difficulty. all of us make blunders! you're properly, 5 gallons is a strategies to small for goldfish yet that does no longer recommend you should kill it! convey it for your interior of reach fish keep (petco petsmart or any small fish keep). i'm particular they'll take the little guy and may even grant you with some keep credit! once you're turning out to be rid of the goldfish, I recommend getting a betta fish on your 5 gallon. they're countless relaxing, and intensely forgiving on newbie fish human beings. I were given one when I knew no longer some thing about fish, and that i recommend no longer some thing. I had no theory about the completed cycling organisation. he's now about 7 months previous and going solid!

It sounds like moving stress to me. Given a few days all should be well and no worries. It is also worth noting that the colors on a goldfish can change as he fish ages and that could be the case here as well. Without more information it's impossible to give you a detailed answer on what else if anything, could be wrong.

It could either be the water is to warm for him. Goldfish are cold water fish. What is the temperature in the tank? Also go buy stress coat or Melafix follow directions on bottle. Stress coat is basically fishy valium. It also may help if you add Aquarium salt to the tank also follow directions on carton.

No he's fine if he's acting fine. GF do change color as they grow, not all of them but I've had many that did. My red and white is now yellow, another was red and white and is now all red. It sucks bc you never know which will do this. Its in the DNA.

goldfish often change color when they are growing. you can limit this a little bit by changing his diet to a food that promotes color -- you can get it at any pet store.
