After Nixon resigned, it was Ford. After JFK was shot, his VP became president.
When FDR died, Truman became president. Of course, he was later elected, wasn't he?
After Lincoln was assassinated, it was Johnson.
There were several presidents who died in office...hmm. William Henry Harrison, for one. Zachary Taylor, James Garfield, William McKinley, Warren Harding...I think that's it.
So the answer is probably 9...but it depends on whether you count the ones who were later elected in their own right.

If I understand your question correctly, one. Gerald Ford was selected to be VP (not elected) and then became president when Nixon resigned.
