I just recently read on one of my answers for a question that a 5 gallon is "way too big" for one male betta. I also have 2 male bettas that each have a 10 gallon. The 10 gallon tanks each have a heater that keeps the water around 76-80 degrees, a small box filter, 3 silk plants, 2 small hideouts, and gravel. The 5 gallon has a heater that keeps the temp around 82 degrees, an undergravel filter, 3 small silk plants, 1 small hideout, and natural colored fish gravel. The bettas have dechlored water that is tested weekly for ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, hardness, alkalinty, and ph and are fed freeze dried bloodworms. Also, I have a female betta in a 29 gallon community tank. Temp around 80 F, filter, bubbler, 3 hideouts and a bunch of plants. She seems happy. Are these environments ok for the bettas?????????/

You have an excellent set-up for bettas. You are one of the few people in the world who actually take proper care of their bettas. OK "few" is an exageration, but you get the point I hope. Anyway, keep up the good work.

Whoever told you that 5 gallons is way too big for a betta is clueless about the needs of these fish, as too many people are.

Keep up the good work!!

Yes. The people posting about small environments are uneducated and just plain rude for posting such false information as if they know anything. And for the record, rice paddies are thousands of gallons. No betta lives in a puddle, ever. The idea is that they COULD survive in a puddle for short periods because of their labyrinth organ, not that they do survive in puddles often. Besides, ornamental bettas are a completely different species than wild bettas.

people like to think keeping bettas in "betta bowls" is the right way to keep them. i keep too many so they all get 2 1/2 gallons and are happy. i have a couple in 1 gallons and it is amazing to me how much difference in the fish there is between the poor thing that sits in the bottom of a cup to a fish swishing around in a gallon to actually having some territory in 2 1/2 gallons. even giving a betta a plant in a one gallon will change his disposition for the better. it is kind of creepy people would have access to information on how to keep a happy betta and still insist on using pint sized bowls with no form of stimulation.

i don't think you need us to tell us you are doing ok -- your bettas will tell you that you are doing ok by cruising around and being happy instead of sitting in the bottom of a bowl with clamped fins and no color.

I have three male betas swimming with my other fish in my thirty five gallon tank.... there's no real "too much water" for a fish. That's like saying a person has "too much air to breathe". Just make sure you're not over crowding the tank with other fish/plants/decorations. They sure seem spoiled, anyway, with all those bloodworms and all! ^_^. And if they're happy, let them swim wherever!

Absolutely wonderful !!! In my opinion a tank can never be too big for a fish, the more room they have to swim the better, You have got it all right and your Betta is going to be one happy fish,

You're doing great Dani. Don't change a thing... well except water LOL

The answer you read was wrong, plain and simple. Bettas can do well in smaller containers or tanks like you have yours in. it depends on the quality of maintenance.
