don't put pine or cider litter because it can give them cancer and lung problems. It is best if you use newspaper. I was told that by a vet. Make sure all of your gerbils are healthy. I have had 3 gerbils, of the three only one is still alive, the other two died in a matter of weaks. COme to find out the gerbil that I curently have is carring something even though he is not sick the other two got sick from whatever he has. Always keep them in a pair. It is proven that gerbils live longer when they have a compainion. they will cuddle each other other alot, play fight, and groom each other. Unless you want alot of babies it is best to get two females. males can be with other males but as they get older they may begin to fight. give them lots of room to play. They love a wheel (which it is ideal to get a wheel that is solid, in the wire wheels they can get their tale stuck.) they enjoys lots of tunnels. They enjoy being playing in sand. Also you may want to get a ball made for gerbils and allow they to run around a room for a little while. I feed my gerbil Fruit Bites Banquet. And I also give them other little snacks such as yogurt chips made specials for small animals. Also they really like plain sunflower seeds. As for as cleaning the cage, you should clean it about 1-2 times a week.s The more you have the more often you change it. The pretty much keep themselves clean. Have a specific place fror them to sleep, drink, and eat. If you keep changing it around, it will confuse them.
OH and you may want to add stuff for them to chew on. The make wooden chew sticks. OR if you want to save money just put empty towel paper or paper towel rolls. Not only will they enjoy chewing on that but also they will make bedding out of it.

Well...I have guinea pigs so this may not help.
First of all, food. Gerbils have special pellets that will supply them with all needed nutrients, these can be bought at almost any pet store. Keep them stocked with fresh veggies, such as carrots, lettuce, and cucumbers. Give them fresh water to be changed every other day, Every day in the summer.
They need plenty of toys. Big tubes to climb in, hay to nest in, and shelter to hid in. Keep away from those toy balls though. They bend the animals spine out of shape which could result in a slow painful death. Don't go and buy expensive toys, you can use stuff at home. Toilet paper rolls to chew on, shredded newspapers to burrow in too.
These animals need lots of love and attention. Get them out to play EVERY day. Keep them away from drafts and damp places, they can get a chill and die. Also be sure to keep cats, dogs, and other predators away from them. Be sweet and gentle, keep in mind they can feel pain and fear too!
I hope this helps you!

it is good to buy gerbal food at the pet store... just ask for some gerbal food... and if it is a hampster then they like to knaw on stuff... so its good to buy some little blocks for them to chew on...... you cant use a regular piece of wood because it will give them splinters in there mouth... so you need to buy them at a pet store....... check the food and water at least every other day... clean cage at least every two weeks... hold them and give them lots of attention

The most important thing to remember with gerbils is, DON'T insert them into your bodily orifices, no matter what someone may tell you.
