Never ever spray WD 40 in a key lock. One of two things is going on. The lock cylinder has failed, or you are using the wrong key. My Chevrolet key will fit your Chevrolet, but hopefully not turn it on. If it's a double sided key, turn it over and try again.
In either case, the fix is a good lock smith and changing the cylinder, or a tow to the dealer for the same thing, changing it out. See which would be cheaper.

The probable cause is the tumblers are worn out. Do you have a very heavy key chain with lots of keys etc. That will do it every time. There is also a possibility that the steering wheel is turned causing pressure on the ignition lock pin, this is also very common.

A few things to try...
1) Make sure the car is in park
2) If you have more then one key for the car see if another one works. Then you will know if it is a key problem or ignition problem.
3) Some cars have one key for the ignition only and one for the glove box or trunk only.
My mother in laws car is that way so she put a dot of fingernail polish and a small piece of string on the ignition one to assure she grabs the right one.

Put the key in and pull the steering wheel a little in either direction as you turn the key.
Spray WD40 in the keyhole.

try putting the key in it and jiggling the shifter just a little sometime the lock mechanism can cause the key not to turn over ,if this don't work you may have to change the key part of the switch, but that might let it turn over for you, good luck i hope it works.

Sounds like the key cylinder has worn out, have replaced many of those cylinders. Need to disassemble & check but that is a common failure
