It's a special day in Punxatauwney, Pennsylvania where they keep a pet groundhog, who each year on Feb. 02, is coaxed out of his pen at a certain time in the morning. If he sees his shadow, there will be many more weeks of harsh, cold winter weather, but if he does not see his shadow, then Spring is just around the corner. Thank goodness he did not see his shadow this year, we've had enough cold weather for one winter.

A deep rooted tradition of using a groundhog to predict up coming weather patterns. Other animals can be used such as ducks, geese, and robins. Before meterology, people would pay attention to hybernating and migratory animals to determine seasonal changes.
Example: Today I saw a Robin while in the TacoBell drive through. By tradition, spring has arrived. It was a cold arrival, but arrived none the less.

American holiday. In PA, it has been tradition that every Feb 2nd they ask a groundhog if it sees its shadow. Yes = 6 more weeks of winter. No = an early spring.
Hope this helps.

Groundhog day is today obviously! But basically people gather around a groundhog who is supposedly famous. If he see's his shadow it means we will have 6 more weeks of winter if not then will we have only two more weeks then Spring. But he is usually not right, so I wouldn't count on it. He did not see his shadow today so we will supposedly start spring in two weeks...we'll see what happens!

A groundhog nicknamed "Punxatawny Phil" comes out of his hole in Punxatawny, PA. Everyone is there to greet him. If he sees his shadow, it means there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't, spring will come early.
This year, the first year since 1999, he did not see his shadow.

It is a silly tradition that a groundhog can predict if winter will end early or not.

Today.
(oops I answered when. . .)
It is the day when Punxatawny Phil (a groundhog) comes out of his hibernation and comes up. If he sees his shadow, there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If he does not, then spring will come early.
