OxyClean - directions on container. Works great, never had it damage anything. Available in most supermarkets.

I like SpotShot cleaner. It comes in an aresol can. Removes tough stains, especially red wine, juice or dyes. Test an inconspicuous area if you use it on dark-colored carpets. On light colors, the only problem I have is it cleans so well you will want to have the entire carpet cleaned.
