I have been seeing an Indian man who has refused the arranged marriage for the last year and last week he was forced to marry a stranger. He cried on his wedding day because he didnt want to marry her and doesnt even talk to his new wife. We have been seeing eachother for a while and his family really likes me. I want to know if he ends the arranged marriage if he would be shunned. What can a devout Indian do to marry someone who is not the same ethnicity? Please help!!!

Divorce is a big thing to India-Indians. It is a CULTURAL (as compared to religious) taboo. That means that non-devoutly religious, very modern, and also very traditional, very religious, Hindu and Asian-Indian people will look down on him for the rest of his life if he divorces his wife.

I don't know if Hindu's have annulments like Catholics do. I think that marriage is marriage for life in that culture, and the pope, or the dalai lama, or whomever, doesn't have the right to say they were never married.

btw: Native Americans take being called "Indian" as an example of the ignorance of others. They are more accurately called "Native Americans" - they prefer to be called that.

It was shown years ago on 60 Minutes that men in India have the commanding position. They can choose to "return" their wives to the other side and the wives will be shamed for life. The marriage arranged also involved sizeable dowry from the bride's side if her family has money. It is a good financial deal for the groom. Only the woman is shunned in that culture, not the man.

Make sure he is not playing you. Many Americans assume the American way can outlast other cultures. You should not have any role in his action. He should take care of his business and make himself available to you instead of you being in the middle of the whole thing playing an active role.

Yes, they can divorce. And yes they can marry outside their race.

It has always been a custom that if you don't find someone that you're all set up, so no worries. In a way, it would really take the pressure off to find someone before you're just too old or if you are naturally timid; which for a grown man to cry and act so immaturely, I think you might want to re-evaluate being with such a man. I don't know...it's your choice to pursue/wait for this man.
