The first answer is called a 1/4 stitch. The second answer is correct. It's the first half of a cross stitch. The third answer is a 3/4 stitch.

to make a half cross stitch, the first part of the X you will come up like a normal stitch and then instead of going down through the whole, you go down in the middle of the material. And then on the way back you do a full stitch. Or the easy way is to look at which way you need your color to go, and then just do a half of the X and not worry about the short stitch. Basically it is just half of a stitch, not a full x. Like if you went from the top left corner to the bottom right corner and moved on.

You put the needle through the middle of the square of fabric.
I gently nudge the fibers of the fabric apart just a little, and work the needle through. That way, I don't wind up with bloody fingers!
