sorry but your understanding of politeness is a bit "weird"...it is me who is polite by running, and making me run is not a very polite thing

Because it is polite, probably a concept you are not aware of.

calmly and graciously (without running) accept the politeness of the person holding the door for you, otherwise people will sense your impatience - and just when you have a pushchair, a load of parcels and/or are elderly and/or become disabled - those same people will let the door swing in your face > which means an ambulance (£ssss) > a hospital admission (£ssss) > paperwork (£ssss) > nursing care and food (£ssss) > if it's a serious head injury=ITU (mega£ssss) > discharge procedure and medication (£ssss) >organising your house with mobility aids (£ssss)
Which altogether = 6 X (£ssss) + 1 X (mega£ssss)
Which is altogether more expensive than:-
1 X (£ss) Fracture clinic
1 X (£s) outpatient appointment
for a broken leg sustained while running from the door.
So "us UK people from the world" (not being racist towards us are you?) like our NHS very much but are not very willing to pay for it. So if you stamp your forehead with some suitable identification, we'll let the door slam in your face and then charge you.
[I blame the full moon...]

You're right. I'm English and I always find this funny. The reason we do it is this: politeness is so ingrained into our culture that the act of kindness becomes more important than the kindness itself.
That's why we stop our cars to let someone cross the road, even if there's no other car behind us for three miles. We just can't help it.
Regarding the holding-the-door thing, the best response is to wave them on with a smile and slight shake of the head.

Hola Amigo!
This is about being polite which is part of our culture. When I come to Spain I try to understand and respect your culture. (I like Spain and the Spanish people very much). It is better to try to understand and adapt to each others cultures when in a different country. Otherwise we will all end up the same and that would be very boring! Please do not think we are all the same as the terrible drunk British tourists that you see in some parts of Spain. There are millions of decent, kind and respectable British people.

Please don't judge all English people by the Chavs who flock to spain. The only reason you think we are all the same is because the rest of us wouldn't go to Spain on holiday if it were the last place on earth. Now I'm not insulting Spain but you can keep all the scuffer holidaymakers. And by the way, I think it is very impolite to allways be in your undwear.

Because we are polite and old traditions have stuck throughout the years for many (some) people... It's all about considering other people, putting others before yourself.... Spanish,hmmm...well what more can i say!

Why don't you let your voice travel faster than you and say something along the lines of "that's ok or I've got the door " ?
Or are you too obnoxious to even acknowledge the curteous person waiting for your pokey butt to make it to the entrance?

They must like the way you look. I hate to admit it, but I usually only hold the door if someone is right behind me or if they don't look half bad.

We are so hot blooded we like to keep cool by letting all the warm air escape from the building we are about to enter.
