Do political veiws influence your opinions on immigration? Do we need to do something about illegal immigration? I am really curious as to how the republican vs democratic opinions vary, do they differ or are they similar?

I appreciate the responses. I have to agree with some of you that immigration isn't a political issue, it is a national problem. I am a moderate democrat but I think that some would veiw my opions on immigration as conservative. I really think that there needs to be an end to it, no excuses. I also think that when an illegal immigrant is found in the U.S. he/she needs to be sent back to their home country. Our country was based on multi culturual integration but there has to be a limit. I believe that our (America's) crime rate, unemployment, and poverty rates would go down if there was some tough standard enforced concerning illegal immigrants. And I get SO angry that there are certain areas in America that English is the secondary language, when an American can't go into a restaraunt and order because everything is in a foreign language.

I'm totally against all illegal immigration. I'm a moderate Demcorat but strongly conservative on illegal immigration because it's not fair that immigrants who want to become legal immigrants have to wait in line and these illegals come in with no shame most of the time. I blame big business that has employers hire illegals to work for peanuts. What ever happened to all the millions of dollars going to Iraq? Even if we could use half of what we spend on Iraq for border security and getting the illegals out, I think it would be good because it would be for a good cause (not saying that Iraq is not a good cause but I think it's been given too much coverage over what's happening on the borders and in Afghanistan). Don't be fooled, many Democrats and Republicans don't support doing something serious about illegal immigration and border security except for Tancredo and a few others. They think that giving illegals amnesty is the way out; they want it easy! I do support a guest worker program that allows only for illegals to work here but have no access to citizenship or welfare (unlike what many members of Congress favor) unless they want to become legal citizens. If Iraq was the main issue during the 2006 election, illegal immigration is going to be one of the top issues in 08. Remember all the people who have died for this country!! Thanks for your time!

Immigration is a complex national and international issue. It is one that will not go away until the economic dispairty between rich and poor ends.

Despite legitimate concerns about terrorism, the truth is that no terrorists have ever crossed the Mexican-American border. Most terrorists in the United States have been native-born citizens; others have entered as legal immigrants, mostly from one of our strongest allies, Suadi Arabia. Trying to tie immigration and terrorism together makes no sense whatsoever.

Numerous studies have shown that illegal immigrants contribute far more to society than they receive in return. Allegations that illegal immigrants do not pay taxes or receive free services that others must pay for are absolute nonsense.

One of the most serious consequences of illegal immigration are the human rights abuses that accompany it. Many of these abuses will be stopped once the govenment cracks down on those industries and employers who pay less than the legally-allowed minimum wage. Making victims of individuals whose only crime is trying to support themselves through honest work is morally and ethically reprehensible.

Many Democrats are concerned about job competition from underpaid immigrants. Most Republicans oppose any legislation that does not line their own pocketbooks.

Politics has nothing to do with my views on it.

In general, I vote Democrat, and agree more with the liberal thought than conservative, but I think that ILLEGAL immigration is very wrong.

The entire process of immigration is what our country is made from. People from other lands coming here and setting up house. But when they set up the laws and procedures on how to do just that, that was when it became wrong to just come into this country without proper paperwork and procedure.

But yet, people don't wish to see that it is illegal to come into this country without following the proper procedure. It is necessary to keep the country operating properly. I mean, if people were allowed to just walk into a store and steal stuff as opposed to pay for the items they took, but only some of the people paid, does one think the store would remain in business? Nope - and neither will this country if things continue as they are.

Illegal immigrants should be sent packing back to their country - no matter what their motives are for coming here illegally. If they feel enough respect for our country and our laws, they will follow the laws and go through the process.

It use to be a party based issue, not the fact anymore!
The Dem's learned that if they give the vote to the class that they promise money or hand outs they would vote for them.
Look at the redistricting and the registration at the DMV for voting.
Now the new Republican leaders(the tax and big Gov Rep) have taken up the voter prospect of the Illegals and trying to get the illegals legal. Bush IS a problem with this. As far as this Conservative I won't be voting for anymore of either party that continues this trend. Enough is enough!!

Illegal immigration is a National promlem. I am a republican. Illegal immigration has to stop. They get free education, free healthcare at our expense, and expect us to learn spanish. Roughly 10 percent of Mexico's population is now living here the in United States of America. If you or I were to go to mexico and ask for free education and free healhcare they will not give it to you at all, they won't even alow you to get a job down there unless you are an American citizen. They are very strict. The Mexicans come to America to work, which is fine, but they send the money they earn down to their families in mexico. The money they earn does not benefit our country.
I think our government will not stop this problem until discover that some of the terroist are coming up through the border desiged as Mexicans. I saw a special on 20/20 about illegal immigration. They showed this one guy who has tried to cross the boarder multiple times and each time has been caught my boarder patrol. When the boarder patrol catches them the punishment is hardly anything. As the man was sent back to Mexico, he said he would keep trying until he smelt the " sweet air of freedom". We have to have a harher punishment to where they won't feel live coming back again and again, over and over.

Immigration view liberatarian, historically each time we tightened up that border with Mexico they are more likely to stay. I go counter intutive apporach to immigration, and open up the borders to mexicans coming, but exclude criminals mainly. What will happen is instead of them trying to blend in Minnesota, or Colorado they will instead work a job on the closet to mexico, and come and go if possible. The fence, and other restrictions makes it more likely Mirgrants will stay than go home, and immigration benefits the pockbooks of Americans with lower price for foodstuff, cheap labor costs, and deporting 12 million gonna create economic and soical problems. Republicans want the cheap labor without legalization, and the democrats want the cheap votes, and therefore there big different between wanting to work here than wanting to be citizen.

This is a national issue regardless of party affiliation this effects everyone! i say as a conservative it's bad business all the way around to let them in here illegally!
It's a moral dilemma not only for those trying to get here legally but those already here trying to become legal residence!
If Mexico paid better wages to its people they would be less apt to want to come here you would think that a mass exodus from ones country like that would be a major embarrassment? then there is the issue of assimilation and learning English and paying tax's( i wish i could get away without paying tax's and still enjoy all the benefits as they do)! Then you run into a hole host of issues with safety and security caused by the pores borders when they are not protected (terrorist for one come to mined)!

Very simply put; Republicans are just racist. Look at the Republican demographic. A Republican is an old white man who's accustomed to having all the power so he's threatened by any outsiders; especially brown ones. I guarantee you that if we had Russia or Germany on our southern border, nobody would care about illegal immigrants. The so called "minute men" would be a welcoming committee........

I have no problem with legal immigrants coming to a country for a better way of life. Here in Canada, we have multiculturalism, we have two official languages and yet, we cannot say "Merry Christmas" to somebody without the risk of "offending" them because of the religious beliefs/backgrounds. If I should relocate to another country, I would be expected to live by their rules and regulations.

i have more of a republican view on immagration. i think something has to be done because once the terrorist figure out that it's easier to sneak a bomb or something into mexico and then into the us over the border we could be in troble. also, the illigal immigrants arnt assimilating into the american culture, there not learning english, and some places alow them to use pesos to buy things. i dont think thats right, when americans go to other countrys on vacation or something and behave bad, which happens, the americans arnt respecting there culture. but when people come here and dont respect our culture, were intolerant it's hipocritical.
