Any attempt by a defensive player to catch the ball with your hat or throw your mitt or other object to stop the ball it's a 3 base error meaning the batter can be thrown out if he or she attempts for a inside the park home run but assuming they don't make it to third or get thrown out somewhere on there way to third time will be called at the conclusion of the play and the batter will be awarded third base. so if you actually do catch it with your hat the umpire will then call time and give the batter third base.

I'm not sure if there's a specific term for it, but it's very illegal. Rule 7.05 of the MLB rules states:
Each runner including the batter-runner may, without liability to be put out, advance --...
(b) Three bases, if a fielder deliberately touches a fair ball with his cap, mask or any part of his uniform detached from its proper place on his person. The ball is in play and the batter may advance to home base at his peril;

An illegal catch. You have to catch the ball in the glove hand or the bare hand. If you catch it in the hat, it will be ruled a hit and the runner will be on first or however far he or she cares to run.

A really stupid play, because you've guaranteed the batter-runner third base and any other runners home.
Note: Merely throwing your glove, hat, or other detached player equipment at the batted ball is not illegal.

its depends if it is a ball or insect but usually its calls a "out or catch". Jose Canseco tied to set a record by catching it w/his big/stero head but it bounced-out/off, and SF Giants left fielder in the 70s/80s(?) caught a ball pop-liner on the run "bear-handed"!

An error.
Check 2.00 of the rule book.
Ryan R, I knew there was more to it than I referenced. Thanks.
