in response to Veronica...spanish is everywhere too but it's a foreign language!

additional info to those actually trying to help: I home educate my son and he has no interest in any VERBAL foreign language but is taking asl. He still has a few years before he has to worry about taking a foreign language.

Most colleges do now accept ASL as a foreign language. For those of you that said ASL is not a foreign language because it's only used here...wrong! ASL is used all over the world, it may be a little different here and there but sign language can be found in every country on earth. Also, I have to agree with the person who asked the question, many languages are now "everywhere"....Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Cantonese, Bengali, Arabic, all sorts of languages are very common now due to the USA having a very large ethnic variety. It's who we are.

Depends on what you need it to count for. Some colleges will call it a foreign language while others will not. If you need a foreign language to get into collge and they don't accept sign language, you could write to them explaining that you took sign language and so dont have a language, but you would be willing to learn a foreign language in college (that works for some of them). Most of the language requirements arnt strict.

Usually, yes it is. I recently went to an open house for a university in my state (UCF), and they said that they were accepting American Sign Language as a foreign language, and I believe other schools are accepting it as well.

To be entirely sure, talk with your guidance counsleor (if you don't homeschool) or go to the website(s) of the school(s) you're interested in, and see if the info is on there, or call and find out if it's not.

I guess it depends on your school or program. For example, in my major, we are allowed to take sign language to fulfil our foreign language requirement. However, in another major, it does not count. The best thing to do would be to contact your prospective schools to get their views.

But in general - if your highschool is offering sign language as a foreign language, you should be pretty safe for the college entrance requirements.

It depends on where you go to school. If sign language is offered throughout your school district (or county), it would likely be considered a foriegn language.

If you're doubting whether or not you can be accepted to universities or colleges you would like to attend, check with their offices or obtain their calendars to see if they consider sign language an acceptable course.

if they ask for any second languages, then you can list ASL. if they ask for foreign languages, specifically ASL doesn't count.
