well, you saw how long it took him to get it right with Andie McDowell's character, and he learned to play the piano, and learned everything about every person in the town (restaraunt scene, when he thinks he is a god) so it had to be many years.
there is no real way to count though, they don't show every piano lesson or every single time he tries to hook up with the girl, or him talking to every person and getting to know them.. it would be impossible to count.

It had to have been months and months if not years. He learned to be proficient in piano.
