Deepavali is another way to spell Diwali ( ppl from the North of India often call it Diwali, whereas ppl frm the South of India call it Deepavali). It is the biggest Hindu religious festival, and is to comemorate the triumph of Light ( the "good" ) over Darkness ( "evil" ). Most people decorate their houses on Deepavali with an assortment to colourful lights and lamps to mark the occasion.Hence Deepavali/Diwali is also called the Festival of Lights.

Deepavli(also called Diwali) is a major Hindu Festival.(as someone rightly said, it is like christmas for christians). Usually is in oct/november
It is called the Festival of Lights.
It is celebrated for 5 days and people burst firecrackers, and light lamps(called diyas) to signify the victory of good over evil.
It is celebrated since Lord Ram defeated the demon Ravan and returned to his kingdom. People burst firecrackers and lit diyas on his arrival and rejoiced with him..
