It was a car accident. He was driving a V W Beetle on a freeway in NY in 1980. As I recall they said he had a suspended drivers license.

I loved his music. He performed in Italy in '78 while we were in port serving on the USS Forrestal.

Taxi is my favorite Harry Chapin song & I do a reasonable cover of it I've been told.

Talented man who left us far too soon!

Harry Chapin is your uncle's brother and you did not realize this? Wow....

Anyway, he died in 81 from a (you guessed it) car accident. They say he died from a heart attack...

I saw him in concert at a community college in 1972. He sat on the edge of the stage and was open and kind. He was one of my favorite songwriters, and an influence on my own songwriting. Taxi is is eerie and distantly sad, while Dogtown has an interesting if twisted point of view. I liked his band, the bass player in particular, who had a surprisingly high clear voice which you can catch on the song Taxi.
