If you would need to leave them in a "cage all day" you shouldn't have them at all. I leave mine home all day but she has the run of 80% or more of the house.

If they are puppies and you don't want them out piddling on the carpet or chewing things up then you could cage them for a couple hours at a time when you are not home. Depending on the size of the puppies and the cage is big enough you could put them together.

I know people who do. I personally don't like the idea. I however don't think it's cruel to leave a dog alone all day while you work if it has the run of the house. However, the dog still has to hold it's bowels and bladder unless it has a dog door. I don't know many people who have the luxury of such an arrangement. That's why my dogs have outdoor kennels. I rent and don't have a fenced yard, so I can't have a dog door. I refuse to crate them or even leave them in the house for 10+ hours (I have a 70+ minute commute). I think that's cruel. However, I've many times been called a bad/cruel/whatever owner because my dogs are outside all day. I don't get it--I don't understand the hypocrisy. I know many dogs who spend all their time inside or out with their owners and yet have no training, little to no vet care, and are ill-groomed and basically ignored. My dogs are very much family members. They just get to enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and can potty when they like. They are never bored outside, they have plenty of toys and things to watch. It may not work for everyone, but it's a perfect arrangement for me. They are safe and I don't have to worry about them. When I'm home, they are with me and can go in and out as they please. Sometimes they choose to spend the night outside, especially if it's warm. I've also seen many people here on YA with the opinion that you shouldn't even own a dog if you are gone all day. But if you don't work, how the heck could you afford a pet at all? It's a catch-22. You have to work, period. Just because you work and are gone for 8-10 hours a day, doesn't mean you shouldn't have a dog. You just have to make certain that pet receives the care it needs. I also have to add that I am in a rural area, and there aren't dogsitters/dog walkers out here, nor many neighbors, nor could I afford such even if there were.

YES! Especially if the dogs are in the cage together they will become cranky when they start to become hungry and thirsty and when they have to use the bathroom. Often the dogs will take it out on each other or may decide to start playing. Which could result in injury or death to both or either dog. My father was taking care of two dogs for a friend of his and they were best friends, they let them walk around the house by them selves all of the time. Well, one day my dad came to feed them and there was blood everywhere. one of the dogs had killed the other and that was when they were free to roam the house so imagine what could happen when they are confined to a cage! YES it IS CRUEL!!

How big is the dogs and how big is the cage? And what do you mean by "all day". alot of things need to be taken into account there.
Two chihuahuahs in a very large cage made for dogs for 5-8 hours should be ok. Cramming a pit bull into a bird cage for 12 hours is insane.

I think that if you have to leave a dog in a cage all day then it is cruel and i don't think two in a cage is any better. Have you tried to leave them in a room at least instead of caged up like bird?

To tell the truth I think that even leaving 1 dog in a cage all day is cruel! But if it is your only choice to put them in a cage then just make sure you do let them out at some stage and let them no that they aren't in trouble and you love them.

Ummmm.....define "cage"? Cause some ppl call a cage a big outdoor kennel or an inside crate. If they are in a big kennel outside, then they should be fine together long as they have shelter, water, and maybe some food. Depending on how long they are going to be confined. If your talking about a crate, then absolutely not. Even 2 small dogs in a huge crate isn't good for more than a few hours.

Yes. It's also dangerous. Dogs are animals, and even if they get along fine when they're out, they don't usually want to be cramped together. I work in a grooming salon, and I've seen owners demand their dogs be crated together while being groomed and/or boarded. Most of the time, it ends in a fight that we have to break up and then separate the dogs into their own kennels. If you need to crate them during the day, I strongly advise you to get 2 separate kennels. If you want them to be together, just get open-design wire kennels and let them see each other through that. You may wind up with a seriously injured dog if you leave them together.
