low octane and high octane what makes up the difference

Octane is just a eight carbon alkane with the formula C8H18. Low octance and high octane are terms related to gasoline, it has nothing to do with the molecule itself. Octane is added to gasoline to prevent engine knocking. Low and high octane refers to how much octane is added.

Actually, octane does refer to enginge knocking as a result of the type of gasoline used. A high octane rating indicates that there is a high degree of branching in the alkane used- for example t-butane has a higher octane rating than n-butane, because the t-butane has a branched methyl group at carbon #2, whereas n-butane is a straight chain.
Octane the alkane itself is an 8-carbon straight chain that is like any other alkane in the homologous series. It is fairly unreactive. It can ract, however, through free-radical halogenation and with oxygen through combustion. It is a nonpolar organic molecule.
