Im 22 weeks pregnant, and I missed the regular exam to see if my baby has down syndrome, therefore I have an appointment next week but I just wanted to know what exactly is it that they do in these exams.

If you are not considered at risk, then i would not do one.
Ask your doctor about the false positive rates and how the process works. It could end up worrying you for no reason.

Amniocentesis (the test where they insert a needle) and CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling) both present some risk to the baby. The risk is small but it does exist. These are usually only done if you've come up positive on one of the less invasive screening tests.

A triple or quadruple screen blood test is usually done first. This just involves taking a sample of your blood. It is not dangerous to you or your baby. These tests do have a fair number of false positives so be aware of that.

There's also an ultrasound check called a nuchal transluceny check. They check some measurements at the base of the baby's neck to look for Down's markers. This is also not dangerous.

what they do is they take the anomitic(sorry dont know if thats the right word but its something like that) basically see how the fluid u have the take some from the back of the babys neck check if it has downs or not but it could leave 2 miscarraige and other problems in the pregnancy ur midwife should have told u this when u agreed 2 get one if u did because that is what i ahve done altho am not so sure now i feel like maybe leaving it till the babys born 2 find out but its up 2u on what u wanna do

They give you a blood test to see if you are a high risk. If you are they will stick a needle into your stomach to get fluid. Sometimes it is not even acurate, I know a woman who was told that her baby would have downs but she gave birth and she was normal and healthy. Sometimes the test itself can cause a miscarriage, there are risks. Not a high one but it can happen. I didn't take the test, if my baby did have downs then I still would of kept her. It's not dangerous if you don't get the test done, it's just to see if the baby has downs.

why are they checking the baby for downs? usually they take a needle through the abdominum(spelling) is wrong, and get some amnionic fluid and test it...is the dates not matching,or are you over 35 years old? Aslo, you know,I personally wouldn't do it if it wasn't your first child..Most of the time, everything turns out fine,I guess they do it alot.

I had ambyocenthesis when my daughter was 7 weeks to make sure nothing was wrong because her dads race has tuburculosious.. Its kind of like an ultrasound but with a needle. It did not hurt.

are you over 35? you don't need the test otherwise. there is a chance of miscarriage from an amnioscentesis. i wouln't risk it.
