why is it required and can the government deny you a marriage licence if they don't like the results? Don't you feel that this infringes on the so-called "freedom" americans supposedly enjoy?

I wonder if now-a-days if they also do DNA tests on them.

I mean, there are a lot of people out there who were adopted... How do you know you aren't marrying your brother?

It is required to show that neither of you have diseases that you could possibly infect the other person with.

Why do you have a problem with it? Are you trying to hide something? Enough with that "freedom Americans supposedly enjoy" hoopla - wouldn't you want to be protected from getting a potentially life threatening disease as opposed to just being able to say oh it's my freedom not to have to take this test??

It's the law and has been for a long time. Yes, it infringes on our so-called freedom, but so do a lot of other things in the U.S. If you want to get married, have the blood test.

Well, it has to do with other legal and health issues. Firstly, incest is illegal so they want to prevent you from marrying your own brother. In addition, they want to protect people from communicable diseases like AIDS. Sometimes the health dept will actually send out a letter to people, informing them that a previous sexual partner has AIDS. There is a public risk that the health dept must warn people about.

Yes, we have freedom in this country but it is limited to a certain extent by concerns for public safety. For example, you have freedom of speech - but if your speech incites people to conduct violence, the govt can prevent you from exercising this right.

I don't know what your state law is but in many states no blood test is even required anymore. In several more states that it is still required it does not mean anything except that you are now informed in case of pregnancy. If you do not like the laws in your state go on a trip to get married in another state.

Part of freedom is informed consent. Those states who still require blood tests simply have those laws to prevent you from unknowningly marry someone who has a sexually transmitted disease.

Part of freedom is also privacy from government intrusion. That is why many states have abolished the blood test requirement.

Ya, the one girl has it right... It's not a matter of the court "not liking" the results. It's a matter of protecting the partners in that they do not marry someone who either is lying about having AIDS or an STD, or for those who do not know that they are infected. Personally, no matter how much I love someone or how long I've known them, I still want a damn blood test to protect myself, them and our future unborn children!
