Actually, law affords the president extended terms during a state of emergency. It has been used before. Cannot remember which president have had exteneded terms though.

Maybe the Empire State Building will come down right before GWB leaves office and then he can claim a state of emergency and state in office a little longer.... so he can claim dictatorship.

Bush has not done an adequate job of describing to the American Public what steps he is taking to make this war come to a graceful end. He has tried to, but he has so far lacked the speech writer capability to transfer the proper message. He could be impeached for such a situation. He is treading on thin ice for his lack of being able to share his passion and mission in enough demonstrated detail to the public and to the Democratic Party. I hope he does a better job. I really think he is trying. IF Bush was impeached his Vice President could also be impeached if the Congress finds that they have lost faith in the President as I understand, if they and the public say so, there is a method to remove him. There may not really be enough voters to say this is so. But if that did happen, the successors would become President until the next Election and that could mean Nancy Pelosi!

Yes, a new president enters even while the war continues. It is against the Constitution of the United States for a president to serve more than two terms or ten years. (A president could serve ten years ONLY IF he/she was a vice-president that had to finish a two year term for the former president and than that vice-president can be elected twice). Basically, after you win an election twice, that's it. President Bush cannot be president after the end of this term. War or no war.

Regardless of the status of the war, the next presidential election will occur on November 4, 2008. The 44th President of the United States will be inaugurated on January 20, 2009.

EDIT: Skahhhhh...our government is not a parliamentary system. It doesn't matter if all 535 congresspeople despised the President and unanimously passed a motion of no confidence, he would remain president. The US Constitution lists treason, high crimes, and misdemeanors as the only grounds on which to impeach a president.

No, Bush's term in office is determined by the constraints of the Constitution, not by how the war is going. (Think about what things would be like otherwise: presidents would actually have an incentive NOT to end a war.)

However, this also presume that Bush does not attempt to pull off a coup. At this point, we can't be sure . . .

Bush is done at the end of his 8 years (thank the lawmakers for that!!!!).

I don't think that the significance of this "war" is big enough for us to worry about the transition of power from one pres to another. Now, if we were looking at a World War, that might be different. But since this is only a vendetta gone arye, well, I am thinking the people will be better served with Bush back on his ranch and out of the oval office.

Iraq war has nothing to do with the presidential elections and if Bush loses he has to leave office to accomodate the new president irrespective of the war in Iraq.

Our educational system is truly abysmal if anyone can ask this question. The war has nothing to do with how long presidents sit. The only way Bush can stay longer is if he declares a state of National Emergency. And since he hasn't done it yet, I don't see how he can justify it now. He's as good as gone. Now if we can just find somebody with actual LEADERSHIP skills to replace him. I have seen no viable candidates YET.

No, Bush will not remain in office. The president can only serve for 2 terms, then he's out.

yes of course, it would be different if the war was in America. Then we would have other issues to deal with. But we are going to elect a new president in 2008 and who ever he or she is will probably have their own plans concerning iraq.
