The back of my jacket has a double pleat (like an invisible expansion) that has folded open on one side. I'm trying to figure out how to make it lie flat again. An iron? OR?

Iron as if it was a cotton shirt? NO!!!! But according to Wilson's Leather, "If ironing is necessary, place heavy brown paper over the leather and use a cool to medium iron. Take care not to overheat the leather, which will cause it to shine."

As the previous members have said - do not iron your leather jacket.

What you can do is to block it or press it. Arrange your coat on a clean, stable, flat surface cover it with a cloth or towel & place a flat weighted object over the pleat. Use something like a dictionary of phone book. Check to make sure it isn't too heavy and creating another line or crease elsewhere.

Leave the weight on for about 30 minutes to an hour.

If this doesn't work, consult a dry cleaner who can clean leather clothing. You may have to have it cleaned and professionally blocked.

You can go to tandy leather and use an ax all to use a specialilized needle and thread. I have a jacket 28 years old from JC Whitney with a lot of patches (leather and pre fab) that still is bad to the bone. Learn some leather craft or have a friend or have it done by someone familiar with leather work,

NO! (to add to the sentiments)- no matter what setting the iron is on, it will ruin your coat. You most likely will never get the crease out entirely but your two best bets are a) taking it to a leather care professional
or b) condition the coat with leather conditioner (you can get it at almost any store that specializes in leather) and since it relaxes the leather a bit, it might make it lay where it should. The coat should be conditioned at least once a year anyway to prolong the life of the coat but it never hurts to have it professionally cleaned.

I am no expert and I have not read any of the answers, but what I would do is not mess with the garment and take it to the dry cleaners. They absolutely know what to do with it. Please no Irons. When you pay money for a Leather item, then I suggest you have money to maintain it. Like a Cadillac, you pay Cadillac prices to repair it. But the cleaners ain't pricey, just don't do it at home.Professionals ain't expensive.

Just hang it in the bathroom when you shower and the steam should loosen the hide up, then just put some heavy books on it, that should do the trick. Hope this helps you out.

Heat may damage the leather, but if it isn't suede you can dampen it and put it under weight for a few days and it should improve.
