I just did a little home experiment and my results indicated that the pH of rubbing alcohol (which is 70% isopropyl alcohol, 30% water) is 5.0 and the pH of acedone nail polish remover is also 5.0--both are approximate. I was using a pool pH-testing strip.

I think that my findings coincide more closely with matahari's up above. Also, if you think about it, both have to be on the acidic side because rubbing alcohol can cause a burning sensation in an open wound and acetone will definitely eat hard, enamel paint.

pH of rubbing alcohol and acetone?

pH is dependant on concentration, however rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) has a neutral pH (7) and acetone usually ranges from slightly acidic to neutral (6-7).

The strength of a (Lowry-Brønsted) acid is its ability to lose protons (H+ ions) and is quantified by its pKa, where for the equilibrium: HA(aq) = H+(aq) + A-(aq) pKa = -log{[H+][A-]/[HA]} {where [X]} is the molar concentration of species X}. The lower the pKa the stronger the acid. Another way of estimating strength is pH = -log[H+], but this is variable, depending on the actual concentration of the acid in solution. The main acid in cola is carbonic acid (carbonated water, H2CO3) which can lose up to 2 of its protons in a step-wise fashion. However, for the first proton pKa = 3.6. Cola also has phosphoric acid (H3PO4) which can lose up to 3 of its protons in a step-wise fashion. For the first proton pKa = 2.12. Note: there are obviously many other ingredients in cola so these pKa's are guides. Vinegar is about 5% acetic acid. The pKa is around 4.7. Rubbing alcohol is about 70% ethanol with a small amount of acetone (and some other ingredients). The pKa of ethanol is 15.9. So relative strengths are: cola > vinegar > rubbing alcohol.

Pardon: This question has no answer. pH is the negative logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ion in water. Isopropyl alcohol and acetone have nothing do with water. There are no hyhdrogen ions.
