Give him time. Each baby is different. If he's formula fed, he's really not going to poop as much as a breastfead baby.

OK, baby went yesterday? are there pee pee diapers? is breastfeeding going well? is baby sleepy? is baby jaundiced? Watch this carefully and FEED the baby...if breastfed baby is sleepy, and sucks a minute then falls asleep....take off the babies clothes...but for the diaper... keep a cold washcloth nearby and when baby starts to drift off....wipe her down with the cold wet cloth...keep baby awake and eating for at least 10 minutes.....do this every 2 hours during the day and every 4 hours at night....feed baby EVERY TIME she cries. If no BM's for another two days...its time to address possibility of a low breast milk supply. A Lactation Consultant can help you with this and is probably covered under your insurance. My feeling is...if she pooped yesterday...she will do it again today or tomorrow.....and you are out of the woods.....If this a formula fed baby....and poop was hard, or she strained to get it out....possibly the high-iron formula could make her a bit constipated ...cal your dr. for advice with that one. Good Luck

My ped said that my daughter should go every day or so. When she did not we were told to stimulate her with a q-tip and Vaseline. when that didn't work we actually had to get a suppository. She was very backed up. She was a little older at about 2 months when this happened. I would call the doctor and ask them what they think.

It can be normal for a newborn, especially a breastfed newborn, to not go for up to 7 days. (It can also be normal for them to go 12 times a day.)

It's very rare for a newborn to get constipated. And they all grunt and groan and strain and even cry and pull their legs up--it's all normal, and it doesn't mean that they're constipated.

Don't worry about it tonight. And if you're still worried in the morning, call the pediatrician to have your mind set at ease.

Once they get into a cycle, babies often have a bowel movement every couple of days--breatfed babies may go up to 3 days between bowel movements.

If he's breastfed, don't worry. This happens.

Otherwise, as long as he doesn't appear to be in distress - crying or straining to go - it's okay. If it goes another day or two or he looks like he's in pain, call the doctor.

no worries. especially if he's breast fed. There's no set "rule" about poop. As long as he's urinating regularly he should be fine. Consult your pediatrician if you're really worried...but it's been 5 days for my son and the doc says as long as he's passing gas, and doesn't seem uncomfortable ...he's ok.
