Every now and again, my home computer loses internet access. Sometimes rebooting (cpu, cable modem) works and sometimes, if I leave it alone and come back a few hours later, its working again. Why does this happen? A few months ago, I went online and found a preferred DNS server address for my internet provider (Comcast) and have used that with no problems. But, the disconnect happens when I am using that preferred address or just allowing it to obtain one automatically. Is there a utility to run that will explain what is happening next time it loses connectivity?

I have found a freeware program called WinSock XP Fix 1.2 that seems to resolve symptoms similar to the ones on my computer. I will use this as a last resort. I was just curious to know what is going on 'behind the scenes' because as I mentioned earlier, I make the effort to try and fix it and sometimes that works. However, if I just leave it alone....it will 9 out of 10 go back to normal connectivity.

You should obtain a DNS address automaticaly.
Right-click on the connection and choose repair. It should give you an indication from there why it can't connect....
like.. Windows failed at repairing your connection...
"Failed at renewing the IP address"
"Failed at reaching your DHCP server"

If you have a router, then perhaps your DNS settings are wrong. I recommend contacting your ISP if there are any problems.
