Yes! I'm right there with you. I sure hope that there are a lot more people that are not extreme one way or another than this forum represents. If YA is a true representation of American beliefs, this country is in deep sh*t!

This classification of "conservative Republican" v. "liberal Democrat" is used because it's largely true. As recently as 15 years ago, there still existed liberal Rockefeller-type Republicans and conservative Democrats in the South, but for demographic and other reasons the parties have realigned along largely ideological lines. There are still some exceptions to this rule, such as the relatively conservative Democratic Senator from Nebraska, Ben Nelson, or relatively liberal Maine Republican Senator Olympia Snow. Moreover, being a "conservative" or "liberal" doesn't mean that a person is an extremist. Hillary Clinton has assiduously built a moderate record but remains a liberal, and the same can be said of John McCain on the other side of the aisle.
The past two presidential elections were won by a Republican tactic of consolidating the conservative base just enough to win 271 electoral votes. The former Republican majority in the House used a similar tactic, with ex-Speaker Hastert allowing only bills that had a "majority of the majority" to get passed and thus reducing the chances of bipartisan coalition building. The change in control of Congress may mitigate this process, and I think there's a good chance that the winner of the '08 presidential election will be the one who does best with "radical moderates" like you.

I don't know, actually. It's more stereotyping than anything else. I guess I'm your foil, because I'm a Republican with liberal tendencies. Nice discussion topic, by the way.
And as a side note, not all Democratic beliefs are liberal ones and not all Republican beliefs are conservative ones. It's just that the media likes focusing on those extremist issues, that's all. Besides, just because I'm a Republican doesn't mean I can't hold some Democratic views, right?
Just a thought.

Mainly extremist loud their view of a perfect world over everyone else. The extreme left and right attempt to brow beat centrists such as yourself into submission of their will. These days the neo-right is far more guilty of this tactic.
Stay moderate as that is the most balanced place one can be.

Because a lot of the people on here are children. They do not know one from the other. They only parrot. They have played too many video games and think that if they say it, it has to be right. If you disagree you get insulted. It makes little difference what they think, they are incapable of writing a cohesive sentence or a literate one at that. Thank you for a good question.

Democrats are to blame of having a them against us mentality besides, yet not as blatantly as Republicans. it fairly is a knee jerk, circle the wagons reaction to a changing international that's transforming into further and extra racially and culturally diverse. White conservatives have become an endangered species. the the remainder of the international needs what we would like and that they are prepared to artwork extra solid to get it. Bush echoed those sentiments while he mentioned, " you're the two with us or against us." while one feels threatened one has a tendency to lash out and paint the international black and white.

Yes, we can be moderate liberals, I think that it makes us more open minded. I try to listen to a persons views and then make a judgment based on those views. Unfortunately there is such a biased against anyone who calls themselves "democrat" that there aren't any views demonstrated just insults, assumptions and slander.....something equivalent to the playground in grade school.

I personally detest the name calling. I suspet though, that it's because to do something other than name calling and categorizing would require too much effort and gray matter. As for me, I am a strong conservative, but lately I've been questioning myself regarding why I tend to be so judgemental and all too eager to hold people accountable. Almost to the point of being angry... Still growing after all of these years.

Very true. Most Americans *are* moderates, but you sure wouldn't know that from reading YA!
I don't let it get to me too much - being called a "racist" every time I turn around is irritating, but I just consider the source....
Have a great weekend!
Oh, and for the record - I'm a conservative Libertarian.

It looks good in print? I beg to differ with you. I'm an Independent but always get accused of being a liberal while in fact I'm much more conservative in my choices but more liberal in my thinking. I'm all for smaller government, fiscal responsibility and pay as you go, I'm also much more inclined to use our tax dollars for the betterment of America and our citizens than spending it on wars.
