Other than the normal alcohol, etc, you really can eat whatever you want, as long as your baby is ok with it. My four month old absolutely hates when I eat bar-b-que sauce. She fusses and refuses the breast after I eat it.

There are no specific foods that you need to avoid.

There are NO foods that a mother should avoid simply because she is breastfeeding. It is generally recommended that you eat whatever you like, whenever you like, in the amounts that you like and continue to do this unless you notice an obvious reaction in your baby to a particular food. There is no such thing as a "LIST OF FOODS THAT BREASTFEEDING MOTHERS SHOULD NOT EAT" because most nursing moms can eat anything they want, and because the babies who are sensitive to certain foods are each unique - what bothers one may not bother another. If you have a family history of allergies, you might want to avoid certain foods (for example, peanuts or dairy), but again, this would be different for every child.

You CAN smoke (although of course it's best not to smoke, it's better to smoke and BF than to smoke and FF as BF counters some of the possible bad effects of smoking) and you CAN drink (sensibly! wait about 2 hours per drink to nurse again) while nursing and you CAN have caffeine (up to five 5-oz cups of coffee per day).

I agree with the first answer.

Just remember anything and everything you put into your body...finds it's way into your milk...so be careful and don't over do it too much with anything.

Make sure you eat healthy and get lots and lots of liquids and make sure you keep taking your pre natal vitamins.

You need to make sure you replenish your body with vital nutrients and minerals that get taken from you and given to your milk...so make sure you keep taking those prenatals.

Also, I have found that you may want to keep track of what you eat for a while ...just so that you can be aware of foods that affect baby...

For example...I have this one recipe for chicken that is a little greasy and I've noticed everytime I eat that chicken...baby gets the worst gas ever.
I also noticed that if I drink cranberry juice...the baby spits up all day the next day.

Keeping track of what you eat and how it affects baby really helps keep everyone happy until you learn what to avoid.

Good luck mamma and congratulations!!

Depends really on what kind of flavor you want your children to receive (milk captures the flavors of food).

But to have a good milk, avoid junk food, alcohol, cigarrettes (not food, but still avoid it) and try eating well, balanced and drinking a lot of water.

that lady that said you can smoke is a selfish mother!! don't smoke. second hand smoke is awful for anyone, especially a new born. also, broccoli, pepperoni, onions always gave my son gas.

Your baby will enjoy everything you ate while pregnant because he/she has already been exposed to the taste through amniotic fluid.
