Germany has never won the World Cup. It was West Germany that won the World Cups of 1954, 1974 and 1990, which, since the German reunification, ceases to exist. If East Germany had also won three World Cups, would that mean that the current unified Germany would wear six stars on its shirt?

I am not questioning the success of the West Germans; nor am I questioning the political status of a unified Germany. My point is simply that it was West Germany that won the three World Cups - not Germany. The two are different.

Sicher ist Deutschland Deutschland. Aber Westdeutschland ist kein vereinigtes Deutschland. Wieso ist dann der Erfolg der westdeutschen Mannschaft am Hemd des vereinigten Deutschlands gespiegelt?

Ok let's get formal on this:
The national team of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) won three World Cups.
In 1990 the parliament of the German Democratic Republic (GDR - East Germany) voted to join the FRG under the article 23 of the basic law (constitution), which allowed German states outside of the FRG to join the Federal Republic.
So the GDRgot dissolved and joined the FRG, which itself never ceased to exist, but just got a bit bigger.
The bigger FRG kept the name, the constitution, the hymn, almost everything and also the national football association, the team colors and the three stars, while the eastern counterparts ceased to exist. A fact bemoaned by quite a few people in the East, because they felt kinda colonized, but still a fact.
So it is just normal that the team keeps the three stars. I mean if Puerto Rico may one day become the 51st state, it wouldn't mean that the US never won anything at the Olympics just because it became bigger, right?
As East Germany never won much in football (except for their World Cup game against West Germany!!) there is no question of what to do with "Eastern stars".

When East and West Germany united, all their assets (+ve and -ve) got added together. Thus 3 wins for West Germany + 0 wins for East Germany = 3 wins for Germany.

West Germany and East Germany were reunified as one! Therefore, if West Germany won in the past, the new Germany has to have them just cuz of the simple fact it is Germany!

They united as one nation and one people, so their footballing successes are now united also. I really do not see the problem. They have chosen to no longer be divided, good on them. Because of that we now see a great talent evolving.
