You can't use a parties history to currently judge it. The Republican party and the Democrat party were both very different back in the Civil War era. You cannot judge all current Republicans as doing so either. It may be more apt to ask:

"Why so people who paint themselves as morally right consider themselves Republicans?"

By having a two party system, unless you make a large effort to be really in the middle, you will be classified in one of the two parties, and the parties are always changing. I am currently a Democrat, but if in twenty years I agree with the new Republicans, or in two minutes for that matter, I'll vote and fully support them. I support the people I agree with, their party affiliation doesn't mean as much to me.

Excuse me, but I am a Republican, and I do not consider myself any morally right than anyone else. I am completely for women's rights, gay rights, civil equality, and my list goes on and on. Simply because my others views coincide with the Republican party's does not mean that I am a completely intolerable Bible touting wack job (not that all Christians are wack jobs, mind you, just that some of the more louder ones clearly are). There are liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. You're listening to the loud squeaky wheels of our party, not it as a whole. There's more to the Republican party than simple social rights, you know. There's economic standpoints, education standpoints, ect, ect, ect.

And the Democrats have been against some very major social civil movements as well. I didn't see them hopping to stop segregation, either. Basically, whatever view the ruling (predominant in the government) party at the time takes, the other party is on the "defensive" mode and immediately counters it. Thus, arguments are born and votes are gained...

Because republicans only think greed, arrogance, above the law, and could care less about the their own county, it is suppose to be "by the people for the people" and they have always ignored this, as it is so obvious, they feel if you haven't been born into a rich family or have taken it illegally to become well off it is your hard luck and pee on everyone else, they honestly would walk over a dying person in the street to pick up a penny...if they were so thoughfull and righteous, we in the U.S. would all have affordable health care, real consumer protection, a court system that works by the law, an immigration policy a long time ago, vehicles that don't gussel gas and not cost a fortune, credit card company's that abide by a law, safe food to eat, schools with qualified teachers, a school system that taught instead of a day care center, a border securty that would stop the flow of drugs, end the world trade org. and improve manufacturing inside the country to creat real jobs, put into law a real polution stantard that works and not profit big business......become idepentant from outside oil, build nuclear powerplants, open up alaska for oil drilling instead of a private park that it is now, and open up other oil drilling areas.....if two partys can't get along and only stagnate the country then make one democratic party and get on with living for all of us....

Well this certainly is an X file Fox. We all would like to know hows come this doesn't fit with that and when is it gonna be my turn and how corrupt is our government? Did the terrorists really exist? Or were they in fact a political party found right here in the US. How can we answer all these questions when all we ever get are cover ups, you know what I'm saying, Some people are even saying we never went to the moon, where did all that money go the more controversy the more money it takes to figure it out. Maybe that's your answer. Money!

More liberal lies. The Democrat party were against ending slavery and that is why the country went to war. Same with segregation. Go check wikipedia you lying fraud. What now ? You guys are going to re-write history to make yourselves look so tolerant and righteous.

Your boy Sen. Robert Byrd, from Virginia is a frigging retired Klan Grandmaster !

And what about unborn babies rights ? Liberals ?? You'll kill a baby in a second but a convicted serial killer should live.

Or victims over criminals rights ?? Libby ?? Hullooooo ??

Laws on sex offenders ?? Laws on child predators ?

Death penalty for viscious serial killers and rapists ? - Oh, but you're all about women's rights. - Unless those impede on the criminal's civil rights.

Clinton had how many blacks in his cabinet compared to Powell, Rice and many others in Bush's administration.

As for your Lincoln remark, John Kennedy was tough on matters of national defense. Damn shame how low your party has sunk in about a third of the time.

Go have mommy help you read your history book, ya ignoramus.

All of the events listed above took place at least 30 years ago or more. Think about it, the party systems change constantly throughout history so thst those who considered themselves once Democrats (Those who favored change) are the republican's of today. You cannot tie those events to the party system as it is today.

Repulican's are morally right in that we believe in cherishing life while Dems like you choose to justify the taking of life (abortion) as though it were merely trash, or making hard working citezens, such as myself, pay for those citezens who choose to stay at home and not get a job of their own. Now that's sickening.

you are wrong...during the Kennedy administration, the Republican minority in Congress introduced many bills to protect the constitutional rights of blacks, including a comprehensive new civil rights bill.
The House of Representatives passed the bill by 289 to 124, a vote in which 80% of Republicans and 63% of Democrats voted yes. The Senate vote was 73 to 27, with 21 Democrats and only 6 Republicans voting no.

Yeah, we really have problems, don't we? After all, it was those awful, racist Republicans who appointed not just one, but TWO blacks to the highest office ever held by blacks.

"Tolerant liberal" has to be the biggest oxymoron on earth. You guys are insanely intolerant. And get your facts straight, honey - the Democrats were in favor of...oh, screw it. You're right - liberals are just f*ing perfect and everyone else is stupid. Happy?

Hey, iqstrike - what an appropriate name. Two words, moron - GERRY STUDDS. At least Foley went away - you idiots re-elected a pedophile. Then, when the pervert died, that so-called "conservative" media pretty much hailed him for being the "first openly gay congressman". Well, technically, that's true - but he only "came out" AFTER getting busted for getting an underage page drunk and having sex with him. But thanks for playing.

And yes, republicans DO Support civil rights, womens rights etc. Liberals like yourself, dont realize that if democrats were running this country, we would be NOTHING!!! and the war in iraq, as much as it hurts to hear about our troops dying, is something we needed to be a part of. We cant just let terrorists kill our people, so we needed to fight back .If you have a prob with that, move to another country. IF kerry were prez. we'd be wimps and would be peace loving retards, who need to have a good eduction so we dont get stuck in iraq. what a looser comment.
