If marriage is a union that God brought together, then why do you look to the state to provide the license before you consider yourself truly married?

Does the gvmt trump God?

It's time to get the gvmt out of our personal lives and let us determine our own marriages.

They don't. You can just "be married" all they want and no one will care. If you want Tax Breaks and the other benefits you will have to have a Marriage License in order to track such benefits in the same way you have to have a Social Security card/number to work.
The Marriage Licenses are all about registering to make sure those benefits are duly recorded and watched/approved nothing more, nothing less. The Government itself makes no difference in a Church wedding as compared to one done in Vegas by an Elvis Impersonator, as far as they are concerned, once the license is sold, signed, and witnessed you are married everything else is superfluous. That's another reason why same-sex marriages should be legal, no other governmentally approved contractual agreement can be denied simply because of the genitals of those wishing to sign such a contract and abide by it's stipulations

All marriages are overseen by the government and that is probably needed because someone has to determine the care of the children in case of a split.
You can imagine a couple who now hate each other trying to determine what happends to the kids.
What convinces you that God brings people together in marriage? If so, his track record is sorely lacking.

The only reason i can see is that the government is just keeping track of all the married people in the US, like a census

We don't. Metropolitan Community Churches have been doing same-sex marriages for over 30 years, and we consider ourselves married in the eyes of God (and are waiting for the Government to catch up!)

The Gov is not supposed to sanction one religon over another. A good lawyer could make a case for this.
