You are missing the point. Registration is how the government taxes you for your possession. Any protection comes from the collective power we give to our government. So mostly for each individual, the only reason to register is to avoid penalties.
Morality, financial responsibility, or protection are not the main issue. Paying your taxes like a good little citizen is.
But you can't write that for your court-ordered essay. :p

I was slow to register a dirt bike motorcycle in Nebraska and someone stole it and registered it legally. There went 1200$!
Registration allows tracking ownership and financial responsibility for accidents also. proof of registration is the first question in most traffic stops, it pays to comply.

If you don't register your vehicle, then you get a big fat ticket...also, if it gets stolen you won't be able to prove it was your vehicle if it is not registered...
