The USA will not admit it, but to survive , the USA has had to develop a MIXED ECONOMY... and to continue to survive, the USA will constantly require SOCIALIST programs of REFORM. SOCIAL SECURITY is SOCIALISM. The V.A. is SOCIALISM. Practically every public work that is put in place to benefit people in the modern economies - is SOCIALISM. Here are some nations that have had openly socialist givernments: Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Norway, Italy,Sweden, Hungary, Spain, Iceland, Germany... I could go on and on. The USA likes to point out only 3rd world nations that have had violent revolutions and some fledgling form of socialism in a struggle against fuedal early stage capitalist nations ie. Cuba and Vietnam and to some extent China and the old USSR, but even in these cases, socialism was something actually beneficial ie, Ernesto Che Guevara helped to more than double the literacy rate in Cuba and socialism helped Cuba to achieve a more just society. Vietnam is now an independent nation with a dynamic mixed economy. China is the most dynamic economy on earth. Russia today is recovering from years of stagnation and is growing again and it is doing so with a multi-party system in which the communist party is the 2nd largest party in its government. The baseline of a socialist nation is the recognition that bigoted class discrimination is wrong - and that the urgent need is to develop a society that is CLASSLESS and has a HUMANE ECONOMY , an economy where healthcare is a right and poverty is not tolerated. Homelessness and Joblessness and Country Clubs cannot be mutually tolerated. Ghettos and Country Clubs both must come down. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels both believed that socialism would only come about when capitalism had reached a stage of development where its ruling clss could be displaced by a new proletarian class that was ready for the new socialist economy. Engels was extremely critical of Russia and believed it simply could not skip a stage of development and bring about true socialism. So in asense one is waiting for the day when the torch can be passed. I think nations like Sweden and Iceland and Norway and Germany have in recent years shown the world that it is possible at last to do so. During the recent crisis the unemployment rate in Germny has actually gone down instead of up due to Germany's better safety net and more efficient programs regarding universal healthcare and education.

I think part of the problem is lumping them all together. People end up homeless for many different reasons. Some have drug or alcohol addictions, some (a large portion) have mental disabilities and physiological problems, some are just down on their luck from a job loss or illness that left them unable to work. Others choose to be homeless. The solution is as individual as the reason the person became homeless. I think a grass roots effort by the community in which a homeless population exists is part of a solution. If you talk to the homeless one on one, you get to know their story and how you can help, if at all.

Because nobody is taking time to talk to a homeless person, volunteer at a mission for a few hours, or understand WHY this happens to people.
And I (and I think I can speak for you too) am not saying the ultimate responsibility doesn't rest on the homeless themselves. Of course it does. But is it so bad to give something back to somebody? Nearly everything we have was here long before we were born. Yes, some of us worked hard to "repay" that debt. Some homeless people did too.

AA Says "Because the homeless should take care of themselves and not expect society to do it deary." So there's one person who can't conceptualize that some people GENUINELY don't have the mental capacity to take care of themselves, my what an insightful remark. You know I read answers like that and I think I should be ashamed to be part of the same species as someone whose intellectual grasp of a semi-complex problem is so low. First many homeless suufer from mental defect be it schizophrenia, PTSD (lotsa of homeless Vietnam Vets, YEAH let's suuport our troops huh Auntie Conservative?) and those who were never afforded the things you abviously take for granted like the chance for an education or a home wherre you could proseper and be taught proper values ( by the way I wouldn't want your value to be the ones they learned your SUCK) Let alone all who suffer from addiction which is highly treatable but your side don't want to pay for ( but damn ain't haliburton stock and exxon stock doing grand) I know let's follow this to your logical conclusion and just kill 'em all, we on this side know that's what most of the people like you want to do, to hell with what your God says in his Bible about helping the poor, well I hope the day never comes when you're cold & hungry & alone

Go and help the homeless. Although a poll taken from homeless people says that the majority of them are homeless because they want to be.

I've gotten to know a few of them here in los angeles. It's very hard to help some of them. We tried helping them, they would come by the building where I work and we give them blankets, food etc. They would hang around here all night and get drunk and smash up the bathrooms. Finally we locked them out.
I tried helping this one guy, he came to live with me. I gave him money and found him some yard work to do. Soon he starting coming home drunk at night and fighting with the other renters. He got fired from his job because of drinking. He's back out on the streets and I try not to feel sorry for him because I know in my heart I did everything I could to help him.

Based on this question, are we to assume that of the 300,000,000 Americans, you are the only 1 who knows the right way to deal with homelessness? I admire your humility.
I admit to not having all the answers. I'm also smart enough to avoid non sequiters & hubris.
A lot of people are doing the best they can, it's not an easy problem to solve.

What do you mean "what to do about homelessness?"
Stop making up nouns that don't exist. There are people who are dysfunctional, who would rather live hand to mouth than go to work like the rest of us. It's a free country. The fact that most people think their choices are bad doesn't mean "we" have to "do something about it." There is no "we" - there's you and there's me. Neither one of us is obligated to do ANYTHING. If you choose to, be my guest - you're not entitled to force me to join you.
I have kids of my own to feed, thank you.
