Why do alot of you say "and like" every other sentence. "And like after the party I want to the game, and like it was cool and like they won and like it was great." Thats an example, why do you guys do that?

I notice that a lot of people on my college campus use that annoying filler word. It's not just "a small percentage of Valley Girls". People do it without knowing. I find it absolutely annoying.

Well, about a decade ago, the valley girl thing was popular. A lot of girls talked at their intellegence level, which made it convenient to easily avoid mindless conversations with someone that appeared fine until she opened her mouth. Anyway (pun), it just stuck because it's an easy filler that you don't notice when you're saying it. I didn't realize I even said it so much because I like never write it until I had an important ivterview with a comittee and when I practiced my answers I caught myself saying it every now and then when I had trouble expressing what I was saying. In German, there are "filler" words that don't mean anything really, such as doch, and the speaker just uses them to add a vocal expression to what he/she is trying to communicate. That's like the role like serves.

OK I'm a white woman in my 20's and I say like occasionally but not as much as in your example, its just a form of speech, and overusing the word can be annoying, but when used in moderation it just gives you a second to think.

Believe me it's not ALL white girls. From what I have noticed it's usally the rich and snobby or the young white girls. They probably do it because everyone they hang around with does it. Either that or for some reason they may think they sound cool. Is that like a good enough answer or did you like not like it? lol

a. I know a girl that is 1/2 Puerto Rican and 1/2 Black and she says "and like" much more frequently then I do. (FYI: I go to school in a big city, so you can't say that it is because she lives in the suburbs or has too many White friends.)
b. It depends on where you go, the majority races in the schools, the average income of the area, etc. (Black girls often say "and all dat sh!t" and "daaaaaaaaaamn", immigrant Hispanic girls often lapse into "joo know"s, etc.)

You're talking about Valley Girls, only a small percentage of white females. I guess it's the same reason some black people don't use proper English. I can't understand a lot of rappers during interviews.

It's a bad habit. People like, hear that kind of talk when they are like, around their friends, and like, they pick up on the way of speaking that like, others talk like, and before they know it, they are like talking that way like all the time!

Cuz those kind of women aren't educated and don't read enough to fill the gay "like".
I see princeton students doing it too!
