When I turn the cooktop on for boilling water or cooking, I can smell gas (very light), but when it is off, I don't smell gas, and I did a check up by burn a match and place around the area where flame suppose to come out when the stove is on, the result was "notthing happen", no flame, no smell. The technician from The Gas Company told me that if I don't smell gas when the stove is off, then it is not gas leak. But why do I keep smell gas when the stove is on? Does it cost a lot to replace a 36" by 21" 4 burners cooktop?

Thank you for your answer.

SMELLING GAS IS NOT NORMAL. YOU MOST LIKELY HAVE A SMALL LEAK BEHIND THE CONTROL KNOB. CALL THE GAS COMPANY AGAIN AND THEY WILL HAVE TO SEND OUT ANOTHER TECHNICIAN. MAKE SURE HE ACTUALLY CHECKS FOR LEAKS WITH A "COMBUSTIBLE GAS DETECTOR"...A C.G.I.

Right any unburnt gas is not good ! Depending on the year and model of the appliance is might need to have the gas valve (the on and off knob) repacked, or replaced.. Gas sniffer or a good tech with some leak tech might be better. I would use caution or not use that burner. It could result in larger amounts of gas to come out and catch on fire other than in the burner.

Could be that the burner is not firing all around? When lit, does the flame encircle the entire burner? If not you need to remove it and clean it. Also could be that before the burner ignites there is always some gas that escapes and could be lingering about.
