Audi's are great cars. They made a major effort to improve their quality in the mid eighties. They greatly improved the cars in almost every way. If you look on EBAY at the used Audi's, you will find it is not uncommon for these cars to have over 200k miles on them and still running stronge. I am partial to the older Audi's and have two of them that I drive for weekend "fun" cars - they are the coupe version of the Audi 4000 (known as the Coupe GT).
I drove a used 1985 Coupe GT (purchased it in 1990) for eight years and had to give it up after an encounter with a deer on the highway. It still ran but the cost of the parts to fix it were too much. I guess that would be the one mark against the cars - the cost of the parts. You can blame the exchange rate on the German Mark for this. Anyway, this car had about 120k miles on it at the time. During the 8 years and 80,000 miles of my ownership, I replaced tires, CV boots, exhaust components, battery, shocks & struts, and brake components - all normal wear items. I never had to have it towed to the shop. And it always started, even in the coldest weather.
I also had a '78 Audi Fox (it's life ended at 135k plus miles) and the difference in quality by 1985 / 86 /87 (the more recent cars I have owned) is very apparent. Since that time, they have continued to upgrade the quality of the cars.
Not only are Volkswagon and Audi part of the same company, so is Porsch. Mechanically, the Audi and the Volkswagon are going to be similar if not identical. You get some luxury appointments on the Audi that you may not have available on the VW, but most likely the mechanicals will be the same.
What has sold me on the Audi's is that they are fun to drive. They handle well, accelerate briskly, get decent gas mileage, and the brakes have good stopping power. Take a test drive and you will see for yourself. Not everyone likes the taught feel of the Audi's but you just might. My experience has been that they are a reasonably relilable car.

To add to the VW answer above, I currently have a 2005 Audi TT V6 - absolutely perfect so far after 55,0000 km but that is not a good testament of the car's reliability.
My brother-in-law has a 2002 TT (225HP 4 cyl) and he has had no problems either.
My VW experience has been OUTSTANDING!
My first Jetta had 275,000 km on it when it got stolen. My second one had 175,000 km on it when IT got stolen. My dad's first Jetta had 300,000km on it when it got totalled. His second had 490,000km when he got his third Jetta which now has about 300,000km. No major issues other than what you would expect - brake pads, rotors, water pump, that sort of thing.
So, if an Audi has the same lineage as the VW, then I hope to be driving my Audi for many years to come!
The 80's were the "lost years" for Audis though. Another brother in law had an 85 Quattro and it sucked. Major AWD problems, Air conditioning problems, electrical.... It was about the same time VW was having trouble with their Passats so maybe there is a connection there.

Good question! Audis from '84 to the early '90s were known for having electrical problems - often quite expensive to fix. These days, Audis are basically Volkswagens. In fact, VW owns Audi, which is why they look virtually the same these days. As far as I know, VW has a pretty good reputation for reliability. However, always ask your mechanic if he sees many coming in for repairs.
