Dogs descended from wolves. Because of hidden variation among genes, artificial selection for certain traits produced the huge amount of breeds there are today in an incredibly short amount of time (a few thousand years).

I don't know why people are listing it, but dogs are STILL considered wolves by the International Society of mammalogists. Breeders and societies have come up with the name Canis familiaris- which is false.
They can still breed and produce viable offspring with wolves, therefore they are the same species.
Dogs are just a different strain- like how you can have 3 slightly different populations of wolves, but they can still breed.
Dogs have been domesticated from wolves several times over the last couple thousand years- genetic evidence points to the fact that even when people had "true dogs" as pets, there was still genetic fall back to wolves, most likely from wolves breeding with the domestic dogs.
Each original dog breed is bred for the exaggeration of one or more characters from a wolf. Ex- Siberian Huskies- run (to catch prey), Pitbulls (bit and hold- to get prey), Border collies- herd (round up prey).

dogs are a subspecies of wolf. The evolved from wolves. so did dingoes.
