Sony makes the best as far as I am concerned. Most of the laptops have nearly the same insides. It's the case that makes a big difference. Sony's cases are well made. They don't have plastic inserts to cover unused ports etc. they have nice doors or attached rubber covers etc. I have had the same Sony for years. It goes in the tent, in the car for kids to step on while traveling etc.and back and forth to work and play. Sony's are well made and light. Mine has never had a problem. Look for how well made features, like doors and covers to port and PCMCIA slots. Also look at how well attached the screen is. Many screens break at the hing. Also find a keyboard that is well built and has the key arrangements how you like them.
The runner up for me, if I couldn't get a Sony would be Toshiba. Acer is also now making some nice laptops, but I haven't had personal experience with them. Dell would be about 4th on my list. They tend to be heavy. Last would be H.P. they have good prices, but cheap exteriors. Wait and get one with Vista Premium already installed. One other thing to ask about, is whether or not you get a Vista or XP (if you have to) CD. Some companies only install the operating system onto your hard drive and that's it. That makes it hard to replace the hard drive if it fails or you want to upgrade to a larger drive. It also makes it hard for repair people to work on your computer if you get a virus or something.

There is no best laptop they are all the same. Where you make out is in the services and add-ons that the manufacturer provides such as support or free printer. One thing you should check is that any notebook you purchase has a vibration protection system to protect the hard disk. For Thinkpads, this is called the Active Protection System. I currently buy Thinkpad T60 2623-DAU notebooks for a University. They are very sturdy. I have not had any issues with this model. I add an additional 1GB of RAM.

You're not going to be able to get a true answer here from anyone unless they are a product specialist and have used various notebooks. Also try reading some reviews.

First of all it is very important to know how much money you are willing to spend. As all computers - laptops that are top of the line today - will be replaced very soon by more powerfull, faster and lighter models in just a couple of months. So - it is very important to know what you would use your laptop and how much money you decided to spend on it.
If it is just for school purpose, and browsing the net - you should just go to Fry's electronics, spend about 400 bucks and get a great store brand - AMD machine that will be able to get you through for a couple of years.
If you need it for a specific purpose - like let's say Graphic design, or any design.. You should consider Apple - or if you are a PC person Fujitsu or Toshiba. I am attaching a link for you - so you can go read the consumers reviews on "best laptops". Good luck with it !

I would have to go with a HP, or Toshiba. Sony just sells old technology and overprices because of there name.
