Yes. if it weren't for sponges the planet would be completely under water and it would be the end of the human race. Be grateful to those little sponges.

Sponges in the ocean are not like sponges we use everyday like.
The sponges we use are actually chemical alterations of the sea sponge.
The common sea sponge does not soak up water, but instead behaves like strainer, taking tiny bits of particles of food, and the water itself comes back out.

So, no, the ocean wouldnt be any different, EXCEPT for the absence of most organisms, since many sea animals depend on the sponge, whether directly or indirectly, for food and survival.

sponges in the water are living organisms they have nothing to do with soaking up the water level.If all of those living things did not inhabit the sea..there would be no purification and there fore no water.The empty ocean would stagnate and dry up.
