Just curious about their approach. Do they help children that may be struggling in reading or math? By chldren, I'm talking about early elementary. Or would it be more advisable to find a local teacher to hire privately?

As a former Sylvan teacher and currently classroom teacher, I must say to TRY EVERYTHING! Sylvan's approach is good and their method does help many children. They begin with a diagnostic test to identify weak areas and then "prescribe" a plan of action tailored to your child. Obviously they are not overnight miracle workers, but if my own child was struggling in reading or math, I would not hesitate to try Sylvan.

Like CT said, it's not a miracle...and 6 weeks may seem like a long time, but if you only schedule once-a-week meetings with ANY tutor, I don't see how you could make much progress. In reality, "working with them for 6 weeks" could really only mean 6 times. Tutoring has to work for your child as well as your checkbook. Sylvan is VERY expensive, but almost always works. Where as, a private tutor from the local elementary school could be just as rewarding and cost only $20/hour (a small fraction of what Sylvan charges).
