the best way to protect your money is to hide it properly. just like the previous post, find ways to hide it. a money belt is a nice way too. just don't show off your money in public places because its hot to the eyes of snatchers. also always place your wallet in your front pocket instead of the back pocket. be always aware of the people around you. and always stay where there are lots of people snatchers and pick pockets are afraid to attack then because they can be beaten up if caught by the people.

1. Your debit cards and credit cards are good at most of the many ATM machines there. Why not just get it as you need it. The payout is in pesos and the atm exchange rate is the best.
2. Don't flash your money around and no one will know you have it. Get about $50 worth of pesos before you leave USA to cover taxi and other immediate expenses when you get there. Once you get to PI the exchange rate will be better. Get it in 100's and 20's. No 500 or 1000 peso bills. They attract too much attention.
3. Don't ever ever change your dollars for pesos at a street money changer. Use a bank.
4. Don't trust any filipino there to "help" you regarding any money matters.

Why would you bring $1000 cash to the Philippines? You can't spend it everywhere there, you have to exchange it for pesos anyway, which will be a huge stack of bills. I'd bring enough to get by for a couple of days and your ATM card, which is usable at most banks. If you're worried about your wallet getting stolen then wear a money belt. No one tried to rob me while I was living there and wandering the city streets alone daily, in Manila nor Cebu.

Well first of all, use an ATM when you need money. Second, blend with the locals. The reason being people there can sense if you are not from the area and some people will take advantage of it. Third, use common sense. Why carry a gran? Everything there is affordable and only carry small amounts and leave the rest in a safe place.

Its better to get a credit card (visa or mastercard). Most of the establishments in the Philippines accepts these cards. Or if you have an ATM (savings or current account )card with affiliation to Cirrus, bancnet, megalink, plus or maestro, you can use it to withdraw instant cash through ATM machines anytime you need cash in the Philippines. We have a lot of ATM machines in different location.

A money belt is always good, but if you think about it I'm sure you will think of a few ways to hide the cash. You can have a seamstress make a hidden pocket in one of your shirts. There are many ways to do it.Just use your brain. Also...make sure you take NEW bills. They do not like the "used"ones, and you might not be able to find anyone to exchange them.

Never flash it around,
I keep some money in my wallet and some in one of my pockets,
Keep your wallet in one of your front pockets,
Get a money belt or a neck wallet,
Make sure that you don't carry that much with you.
Give it to me---just joking.
I also try to keep my hand in the pocket with the money whenever I can.
