Alright, about 3-4 months ago my former employer found out I did something crooked (I had already left the job for a few months then) and since it involved around $8,000... I was really worried that they would take me to court but since it's a huge company, actually bank, maybe they didn't want to bother? I don't know, please don't judge me, I made a huge mistake I know and trust me I paid for it, my conscience bothers me everyday, but anyhow... When I stopped working there I lived in a different address and a few months later I moved to where I am now and I just realized that if they did file a lawsuit against me they would notify me by mail right? but.. in my old address they don't have anything since they said they threw away all the mail so right now I don't know if the bank filed a lawsuit or not. I ran a background check on myself and nothing came out but I'm worried please someone tell me how to find out if they filed a lawsuit or not, is there any way to know?

If someone sues you, it is their responsibility to locate you and serve you. If they don't, they can't proceed with their case. The fact that you moved isn't that big a deal, there are people who are expert at locating individuals. If the bank served you by mail but the letter got misdirected in the course of the move, the bank would find out where you live and/or work and send a process server who would deliver a complaint in person. If the bank wants to sue you, I am quite sure they will let you know about it.

Your main concern would be if they filed criminal charges against you. The local prosecutor could tell you that. If they sued you the local sheriff's dept would have served a complaint and summons on you. If they couldnt find you then a private service may have tried to find you. You can call the clerk of courts or try the web site for the local court and search by your name to see what legal action may be pending. Good luck.

Since it's been a few months, I don't think that they have filed a lawsuit against you. They would need solid evidence against you and if that were the case they would have seeked criminal penalties against you. It's a small amount to try and recoup in a civil court but I would be concerned that they would go after you criminally.

Call the magistrates office. If they took out a lawsuit then the sheriff's dept probably tried to serve you. If you've moved, they have checked your credit report and any forward of address through the post office to try to locate you.

There will most likely be a warrant for your appearance - anyway, i think you should call magistrates office first.

Well, you have asked the $8,000 question. It sounds like you want to get away with your crime. Sorry, I'm an ethical lawyer. You want to know if they filed a lawsuit against you? Ask their legal department. Want to take care of that bothersome conscience? Send their legal department $8,000 and tell them why you're doing it. If you don't have it in one lump sum, offer to repay it in installments. Good luck.
