Since the suns play at such a fast pace, it's misleading to judge their defense based on the overall number of points they give up, rather than on efficiency or field goal percentage defense. It's unrealistic to score 120 and hold your opponent to 80 every game because then you end up winning by 40 or 50 points. There are plenty of teams that give up less points by holding the ball rather than because of their defensive abilities, which is why they don't win as much as the suns. If you look at the teams that won multiple championships like the showtime lakers and jordan's bulls, they had both good offense and defense, not just good defense. Great offense is the reason why the suns are undefeated when holding opponents below 100 points.I don't remember the knicks and heat of the 90s ever winning any titles.

Very underrated. You are definitely right about misleading based on ppg. They score so much you are definitely right. I would be willing to guess (although I don't know how to get this statistic) that if you were to look at points per posession, or points per 100 possessions, and compared, it would be good. not great, because the fast style of play gives their opposition a decent opportunity, but it would be better than the respect they get.

Suns don't have no defensive skills. They just wait for the other team to miss a shot so they can run up the court. Defense wins championship, Phoenix don't play defense. Look at all the teams that won a championship, the Spurs, the Pistons, the Bulls, The Rockets, The old Lakers. All those had good defense. A run and gun team don't win championship. The same with football. Look at the Dallas Mavs. Under Don Nelson, they were a scoring team. THATS IT. Under Avery, they are a scoring and defensive team. And they became Better. They can not win a championship with just running and gunning.

well we can definitely say their offense is good. But when they take 20 point leads, and everyone knows the opposing teams still has a chance to come back because it is in fact the suns, it does not say much for their defense.

Personally, if their defense was any good, they should be able to hold that 20 point lead or extend on it, rather than letting the team catch up.

Compare the suns to a good defense team like the rockets who take nearly 30 point leads, and can bench tmac and hold onto that 30point lead for the win.

Suns defense sucks, but their offense more than makes up for it.

They are not underrated defensively. They just are not a strong defensive team. They do not have that one guy that night in and night out can guard the opposing teams' leading scorer. They do not play good man D and their team D leaves something to be desired. They just outscore people. If they had defense the lakers wouldnt have taken them to 7 games last year. The suns will not win a 'chip until they can shut teams down.

I think they're somewhat underrated defensely but lets face it the team lives and dies by its offense. Put them against Dallas and you'll see just how far they are from being a truly great defensive team.

Denfense doesnt matter when you are the highest scoring team in the league and 3 teams take more shots than you per game. Easily the best team in the west.
