Once convicted the inmate has no rights. As far as where they are housed it is not for the convenience for their family to visit them. It is where there is a bed available for them and it is also according to the sentence and what their rating is. High, Medium, or Low facility this is all determined by their prior convictions before going to prison. The system doesn't care whether the family can visit or not. They aren't there to consider whether this criminal has visitors. As far as they are concerned, when the family goes to a prison to visit you are treated any better than the person incarcerated, because so many people try to take in contraband, so they are leary of everyone entering the facility. That is why everyone is screened when coming to visit an inmate. Only those without a record and that have been approved can visit and sometimes they will try to sneak things in knowing it is wrong. But when they do they are risking being jailed themselves or losing their visits permanently. The inmate is punished big time. I know someone this happened to.

California is not trying violate the rights of the inmates or their families. It is sometimes necessary to relocate inmates to other facilities in other states due to the overcrowding of the prisons. Usually, if the move happens, the prisons try to work together to facilitate the inmates and their families. Reasonable long distance phone rates, televisits (web cam), and during the holidays there is an organization that helps low income families travel to other state prisons so that they can visit their son/daughter.

As an inmate you have very little rights. Its not Club Med, your in prison for harming someone or something. Its punishment. You can't be torchered though. Families are allowed to visit (congical) if you stay out of trouble, if your problematic you lose all your luxuries.

My question back to you is: why should any prisoner be put to death? Revenge is a pretty pathetic answer in my mind. It in no way alters the past, and only puts more blood on the hands and heads of new participants. Why not let the killer live his/her life out in prison? Isn't there some possibility that some good might come out of this? A confession? A redemption? An apology? What good is the death penalty?

Of course they do, we all do. Prisoners do have stricter guidelines and procedures for visitation but they still have rights.
You need to be more specific....
They have no rights to where their relative will be imprisoned. It is up to the system and where they system can house them.
