Does a person need to go see a doctor only to get a medication for an ear infection? Is there an over the counter medicine that can help with the pain?

antibiotics from a Dr are best

It really depends on how bad the infection is. I have suffered with ear infections all my life. If it's a child I would recommend going to the Dr. only because frequent ear infections can cause hearing loss. I know this from first hand experience. If it's a mild ear infection you can treat it with pain killers and antihistamines. If it doesn't get better within a week or so though, I would strongly recommend going to the Dr for some antibiotics which aren't available over the counter. Hope this helps!

Yes first you should go to your doctor and get an antibiotic to help reduce the infection, but note that sometimes its not enough. So I will give you my grandmother cure. get a sock fill it with salt enough to make a small ball, then tie it off. Put it into a pot and heat it up until it gets hot. Take it out and put another sock over it. Now, put it on your pillow and then put your infected ear on the sock and leave it their as long as you can. What will happen is the salt will cause the infection to drain out of the ear and that's what you want. So keep doing this until you have no more problems.

The best thing to do is stop it before it turns into an infection because that does take the prescription. The best curatives for ears are the garlic family. What we have learned is that for drops the juice from a baked (yes microwaved works) onion tends to stop the problem before it gets to that point. For a young child with an earache the onion can be cut in half and held on the ear while they fall asleep with their head in your lap, and the problem is usually gone in the morning.

Soak chopped up garlic in water. Strain off the garlic and put a few drops of the water in the ear. It will kill the infection. Give it time to heal. You can use the water often if you feel the need. You won't have to block the ear to keep the water in the ear. Leave it in for a couple of minutes and let it drain out naturally.

A doctor told me that if you have an ear infection, use equal amounts of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar and using a dropper, drop a couple drops in your ear and lay down so that it stays in. This is the cheaper alternative to antibiotics and it works well. Do this for a few days, and your infection will go away. The alcohol dries fluid and the vinegar kills bacteria. I thought this sounded weird, but I used in on my daughter a few times and it worked really well. Do this 2-3 times a day.

I have constant problems with my ears and I don't like to take antibiotics, I use white alcohol and vinegar. It helps with the pain as well, very cooling. It may sting the first time you use it. I usually do this and take Advil and it clears up after a few days.

If you are running a fever or if the pain is severe, you will probally need an antibiotic.

Yes, in order to get rid of the infection, you'll need an antibiotic, and these are only available with a prescription.

Any pain reliever (aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen) can help with the pain.
