There are some that are. The weight statistic is probably very similar to the population that doesn't have this mental illness.

There is no set limit for a schizophrenic it can affect anyone at any age no matter how good their health or life style anything at all it takes anyone it pleases.
Although the majority of anti psychotic medication does cause weight gain some more than other some can cause up to 20 pounds over years as many make the patient feel hungrier than they are and not feel as full as they normally would so they eat in excess.
Those untreated often do not take proper care of themselves (some do some don't) so eating proper and regular meals doesn't happen all the time for some so they won't gain much weight.
Many are obese many aren't thats just the way it is.

I'm amazed that there are so many people who think schizophrenia has something to do with having two personalities. Perhaps they're thinking about bipolar disorder or multiple personalities... not sure, but they're not very bright, in any event.

As for your question, the only known relationship between schizophrenia and obesity is that some of the antipsychotic medications prescribed for schizophrenia can cause increased appetite and/or slowing of metabolism so that means weight gain. Obviously this will vary a great deal from person to person.

Also, some of the newer medications (Abilify - aripiprazole is my favorite) do not cause those side effects, so just because you need medication in order to avoid psychosis no longer means you also have to have a struggle with your weight.

I'm not sure how serious your question was, but some of the folks answering should educate themselves before making remarks about a serious biological disorder that causes folks to have to live with the stigma of "mental illness." It's people like that causing the stigma to begin with. This is 2007. Let's get over ourselves, shall we, folks?

I worked in a locked behavior unit for over two years, and I can tell you that schizophrenics have no certain body style. There were as many obese ones as there were underweight ones, and the range went from 87lbs to over 500.

Maybe for the same reason average weight people aren't obese.

It's against the union rules. Also, inside every obese schizophrenic, is a skinny schitzophrenic trying to get out.
